What is the Difference Between Skills and Training. This is a featured page

Admittedly we could have picked better terms for these categories as it does cause some confusion. SKILLS are those complete skill sets that result in a certification. Both Accredited and non accredited Certifications are covered in this category. Skills and Training are both grouped according to Agency Types which are in turn grouped by executive type. An executive type is typically related to a Federal Agency or Association that has some type of regulatory authority over the Agency Type. The Agency Type category is specific to the type of training typically required of an employee of a single agency. For Example, The Fire Service executive type has three Agency Types which are shown with examples of the skills sets associated with them

  • Fire Department
    • Fire Fighter II
    • Driver Operator Apparatus equipped with tiller
    • Trench Rescue II (formally referred to as technician level)
  • Fire Investigation and enforcement
    • Fire Inspector II
    • Fire Investigator
    • Plan Examiner I
  • Fire Service Training
    • Public Fire and Life Safety Educator II
    • Fire Instructor III

When a SKILL is verified the entire skill set including all of the individual learning objectives are associated with the user’s record. The Skill set can be modified by the agency administrator and that modification automatically affects all of the records held by that agency.

Training refers to a category and process that allow for INDIVIDUAL Learning objectives to be associated with a user’s record. This is useful if you want to track the progress of someone who is in the process of obtaining a Skill Certification. For example You are putting a class of recruits through Basic EMT training. They are currently studying the Studying the Emergency Trauma Care Module. The evening’s class covers Cervical Stabilization, Spinal Immobilization, and emergency moves for endangered patients. These individual TRAINING objectives can be added to the user’s record as he or she completes them. Not only is this a very useful tool for training management within the organization but it allows for emergency use of trainees in critical situations in accordance with their most recently learned skills.
