Requirements for Digital Photo Capture for RAPTOR ID Card
Here is a brief informational guide outlining the capture of Digital images for the purpose of printing a photograph to a RAPTOR ID. Photos can be stored in you “MY Pictures” folder until you need them. Digital Cameras can be purchased through VUANCE. If you encounter any difficulty, please call our customer service staff at 978-630-0000

The identity verifier will capture the credentialing candidates digitized (portrait) photo. The capture of this image can be achieved in two ways.

RAPTOR CONNECT contains photo capture and facial analysis tools that used with a RAPTOR REALTIME Field Kit or authorized hardware configuration make compliant photo capture as easy as point and shoot.
A RAPTOR Client may choose to use Digital (ID) cameras already deployed in their region. If this is the case the

RAPTOR WEB application contains an import picture function allowing for images previously captured to be imported from a computers desktop or Windows™ folder. If the Client chooses to use this option the following requirements in the capture of the image must be met.

  • Digital cameras and scanners used to capture facial images shall produce images with a pixel aspect ratio of 1:1. That is, the number of pixels per inch in the vertical dimension shall equal the number of pixels per inch in the horizontal direction.
  • Interlaced video frames are not allowed for the frontal image type. All interlacing shall be absent (not simply removed, but absent)
  • The photographic requirements for the full frontal face image type in this document represent the minimum relative dimensions of the full frontal image with respect to the face. These minimum requirements will assure that the entire head is in the image, as well as the outline of the shoulders.
  • Centered Image: The approximate horizontal midpoints of the mouth and of the bridge of the nose shall lie on an imaginary vertical line AA positioned at the horizontal center of the image.
  • Position of Eyes: An imaginary horizontal line BB through the center of the eyes shall be located between 50% and 70% of the vertical distance up from the bottom edge of the captured image.
  • Width of Head: The width of the head is defined as the horizontal distance between the midpoints of two imaginary vertical lines: each imaginary line is drawn between the upper and lower lobes of each ear and shall be positioned where the external ear connects the head. The head width is shown as length CC. The minimum (Image Width: Head Width) ration (A: CC) is 7:4
  • Length of Head: The length of a head is defined as the vertical distance between the base of the chin and the crown (top of the hair), shown as length DD in Figure 3‑1. The crown to chin portion (DD) of the Full Frontal Image pose shall be no more than 80% of the vertical length of the image (B)
  • The subject must not have a smile and there is to be no tilting of the head.
  • Resolution: For an image for optimal human examination and permanent storage, the resolutions of the full frontal images shall be at least 180 pixels for resolution for the width of the head, or roughly 90 pixels from eye center to eye center.
  • Padding or Background shall be 18% Grey.

Photo Capture Guidelines

NOTE: Requirements for the capture of a digitized portrait image have been extrapolated from INCITS 385-2004 “Face Recognition Format for Data Interchange”, American National Standards Institute May 13th 2004. National Institute of Standards and Technology Special Publication 800-76 (Draft) “Biometric Data Specification for Personal Identity Verification” January 24, 2005.
